Generally speaking, third party liability car insurance will actually cover your touring caravan on the highway. However, the answer to whether or not caravan insurance is actually needed has got to be a resounding YES! For a start if, heaven forbid, an accident should occur your third party care insurance would not cover the full cost of your caravan and contents and you would definitely be out of pocket by one hell of a lot of money!

But it can be quite a daunting prospect to know how to go about finding the right insurance at the right price. Whilst relaxing on your caravanning holiday, the last thing you want to start worrying about is whether you have enough insurance cover should anything happen.

First thing to note is that the cheapest insurance may not necessarily be the best, and it is important to always carefully check the caravan insurance policy.

Some insurance companies insist that all precautions against theft are taken, which I think is a good necessity anyway! Caravans these days have their windows etched with a unique cRiS registration number. This does help somewhat, but it is not enough, and I highly recommend at least obtaining a wheel clamp – and using it!

All insurances carry an excess, but some companies allow you to choose the level of excess, giving a more flexible arrangement.

If your caravan is less than 5 years old then I think it is definitely worth opting for the “new for old cover”. Some companies may offer this for caravans up to 10 years old. This ensures that should anything happen they will pay to replace your caravan with its new equivalent, often including fees and any other associated costs. However, most insurers do have a limit, so you should check your policy schedule.

It is usual that the caravan is insured whilst be towed by anybody aged 18 years or older and holds the appropriate valid driving licence (and taken the Car and Trailer Practical Test if necessary). However, this point must be checked in your policy.

Before getting your insurance, check the policy to ensure that accidental damage cover is included as standard, and that the whole structure of the touring caravan, including awnings, fixtures and fittings and furniture and furnishings is covered.

Your value of your caravan contents also soon mounts up, and you should insure that they too have adequate cover.

If you are taking your caravan overseas then do check your policy before going to ensure that you are covered whilst abroad.

So make sure that you are fully prepared for the unexpected so that you can enjoy your holiday with peace of mind.
